Applications and Candidacy
Dental crowns are durable cap-shaped restorations designed to fully cover and strengthen a tooth that has been damaged by decay or injury. Crowns are made of durable materials like zirconia, and can last up to 10 years or more with proper care.
Our doctors offer both traditional and CEREC crowns, which can be designed, fabricated, and placed all in one appointment.
Dental crowns benefit patients who want to reinforce a damaged tooth that does not require extraction. You might need a dental crown if you crack, chip, or break a tooth, since you are more susceptible to bacteria buildup and subsequent infection. In addition, if you leave a cavity untreated, the decay can spread to your healthy teeth and gums. Dental crowns are also placed after root canal therapy to seal the tooth and protect against further damage.
What is the Process of Receiving a Dental Crown?
With innovative technology, you can enjoy the benefits of crowns faster than ever before. Whether you choose a traditional or same-day crown, the process of receiving a dental crown is similar. First, Dr. Paek will examine your teeth, both visually and using digital x-rays. After determining the source and extent of the problem, your doctor can clean out the area and re-shape the tooth to make room for your dental crown. After placing the crown, your doctor will make sure it feels comfortable when you bite down, making any necessary adjustments before cementing it in place.
Traditional vs. Same-day Crowns
Traditional crowns involve taking impressions which are sent to an off-site dental lab. Until your next visit, roughly two weeks later, your doctor will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth.
Single-visit crowns are made with our cutting-edge CEREC machine, which uses CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology. Based on more accurate 3-D digital imaging, the machine cuts and fashions your restoration right in our office. This not only allows for a more precise fit but also saves you the time and money devoted to a follow-up visit.
Some of the unique benefits of same-day crowns include:
- Requires one office visit instead of two
- No temporary crowns are necessary
- Preserves more of the healthy tooth structure
- CEREC restorations typically last longer than gold or lab-manufactured ceramic crowns
Both types of crowns can last over 10 years if they are well-maintained. Your doctor will give you thorough instructions for proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing. Generally, you can care for your crown just like your natural teeth.
